My long life friends are my gaming buddies, but we are spread out over several states. Playing online is the best way for us to play/socialize. It's the next best thing to being with them face-to-face.

One thing that looks appealing to me is that with a online virtual table top you could experience how different gms go about their work. I cant see virtual table top as a replacement but factor in friends move and still want to socialize and play together.

I have been using this set for a while now with no real issues- MapTool + Skype. I play every weekend with my group using these free tools and have had great play experiences.

I recommend using Ventrilo. You can host it yourself or pay for a host. I have a host that charges $3 a month for 12 concurrent users.

Have you tried MapTool as a virtual tabletop?
